Also known as Reisho-zan Shinsho Gokuraku-ji, this temple belongs to the Tendai sect. In 984, the priest Kaisan of Enryaku-ji built a hall in a villa to the east of Kaguraoka at a request of Fujiwara Senshi and enshrined an Amitabha image created reportedly by Jikaku Daishi. This is the origin of this-temple.
The present bulidings were reconstructed in 1705. The principal image in the main hall,the standing figure of Amitabha Buddha(important cultural property), was produced in the late Heian period.
The treasure of the temple includes the three-volume History of Shin'nyo-do(important cultural property) dating from the Muromachi period and the six-volume Lotus Sutra(national treasure).There are tombs of many historical figures such as those of the Fujiwira clan in the precincts.This temple is also renowned for its beauty of autumn tints.
